The Jews are the children of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. They became a people through a covenant with G‑d over 3,300 years ago. Abraham faced many challenges and risked his life to publicize his beliefs. His son, Isaac, followed in his path, as did Isaac’s son, Jacob, who G‑d named Israel. Maybe it wasn’t a great business tactic on my part, but when I practiced family law, if I had doubts that the client’s narrative really warranted a divorce, I would ask probing questions during the initial consultation. Rabbi Moshe Feinstein was one of the major leaders of American Jewry in the 20th century. Born in 1895, he came to New York in 1936 in order to escape the oppressive Soviet regime. In addition to the students in the yeshivah he headed, he guided rabbis and lay people with his insightful and definitive responsa on virtually every area of Jewish law. Many of them have been collected in the multi-volume Igrot Moshe. Chassidim, a collection of ethical and halachic teachings that is widely studied to this day.

Every week, for the 25 hours beginning just before sundown on Friday until after night has fallen on Saturday night, Jewish people celebrate Shabbat, a period of rest and spiritual rejuvenation.
